Mac Allister runs the show

Liverpool’s match winner delivered a complete midfield performance against Real Madrid, dictating the tempo and leading by example.

He completed 32 of 35 passes, won five duels, made three tackles and scored the decisive goal. Calm, composed and clinical, it was a reminder of his growing influence under Arne Slot.

Salah back to his best

Mohamed Salah looked back to his best against Real Madrid, winning more duels (10) and completing more take-ons (5) than any other Liverpool player.

The Egyptian was relentless down the right and seems to be hitting top form again at just the right time for Arne Slot’s side.

Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid: Alexis Mac Allister re-ignites Reds' season

Outside Anfield, the fireworks sputtered and died in the teeming rain. Inside Anfield, it was a place for the rocket’s red glare and bombs bursting in air.

It was a place of roars and frenzy and chanting for Stevey Heighway on the wing and for Conor Bradley, for heroes old and new. It was raw and it was visceral.

Awkward moment Virgil van Dijk shuts down Trent Alexander-Arnold question

Virgil van Dijk was in no mood to discuss Trent Alexander-Arnold after Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Real Madrid, shutting down a question from Theo Walcott during his post-match interview.

The Liverpool captain was asked by the former Arsenal winger if he had spoken to his ex-team-mate before or after the match, but Van Dijk simply replied ‘no’ before shaking his head, clearly keen to move on.

It was an awkward exchange after a tense night at Anfield, with Alexander-Arnold booed throughout his first return since leaving for Madrid in a £10million summer move.

Walcott quickly changed the subject, while fans on social media suggested Van Dijk ‘couldn’t care less’ about the defender’s comeback.

The Dutchman had already made his stance clear earlier in the week, saying there was ‘nothing personal whatsoever’ between them.

Trent Alexander-Arnold will not have been surprised by what came his way

At one end of Anfield, on the front rows of the Real Madrid section, there was a marriage proposal before kick-off. Happily, it appeared to be accepted.

Elsewhere, the bitterness and rancour of a recent divorce remained audible and visible. For Trent Alexander Arnold and Liverpool, it seems cordiality and respect will never return.

Bellingham: 'We were a lot worse off last season'

Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid, Amazon Prime:

After they scored, it felt like we wanted to force things a little too much. Things to learn, still really early in the season and still early in the Champions League campaign. We were a lot worse off last season and still managed to get through.

Slot: 'I tried to tell them what was actually happening instead of all the noise'

Arne Slot, Liverpool boss, Amazon Prime:

It is nicer if you win games than if you lose as a manager. If you lose then it takes all of your time because you so badly want to change it but you also try to be the same manager and person that you are when you are winning.
I did the same, told them that with our set piece balance it is really hard to win games of football, open play chance creation was good all season apart from the Villa game, which we won.
So I tried to tell them what was actually happening instead of all the noise around them. The only thing I can do is tell them my opinion and hope it is strong enough for them to believe me.

Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid PLAYER RATINGS: Who had a 'coming-of-age performance'?

Liverpool once again got one over on Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday night, suggesting that the Reds may well have turned a corner after their disastrous run.

Alexis Mac Allister's goal was the difference, but it could have been more than 1-0 if it were not for a fantastic performance from Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Jamie Carragher accuses Trent Alexander-Arnold of 'hoodwinking' Liverpool fans

Jamie Carragher has accused Trent Alexander-Arnold of ‘hoodwinking’ Liverpool fans after his summer move to Real Madrid, and defended the hostile reception the right back received on his return to Anfield.

Speaking on CBS, Carragher said supporters had every right to feel betrayed, arguing that Alexander-Arnold’s silence over his future before leaving on a free had frustrated fans who once viewed him as one of their own.

The former Liverpool vice-captain said the 27-year-old’s public image as a lifelong Red did not match his decision to join Madrid just months after lifting the Premier League title, calling it understandable that supporters felt misled.
