Audi culls flagship car after 32 years of service ferrying Royals, executives and diplomats
Audi's long-running flagship car has officially been axed.
The A8, a prestige luxury saloon that's commonly been used to ferry the Royal family to engagements in the past has been ditched by the German brand.
The car debuted in 1994 and has been available across four generations since.
It is Audi's premium alternative to BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XJ and Mercedes-Benz S-Class models available over the last 32 years.
Sold as an extended wheelbase model to provide ample space and supreme comfort in the back seats, it too could be ordered as an armoured 'Security' variant.
As such, it became an obvious choice for the British monarchy as well as business executives and diplomats who wanted the utmost comfort and protection.
But Audi has decided to lower the curtain on its priciest limousine option, which is now set to be succeeded by a plush SUV instead.
End of the road for the poshest Audi: The German car firm has culled its flagship A8 model. The first-generation model (pictured) debuted back in 1994
While the A8 is still available to configure on the manufacturer website, Audi has closed its order books in Germany and the UK this month.
That said, there are some zero-mile examples in stock across the brand's franchised dealer network in Britain.
An Audi representative, speaking to Motor1 earlier this month, refused to confirm if production had officially ceased, but did say order books had closed from 18 February.
The German car maker has clarified to Daily Mail and This is Money that manufacturing had ended last month.
The A8 has long been the benchmark for quality and tech for the brand, with its platform underpinning other models within parent group Volkswagen's battalion of brands, including the Bentley Continental and Porsche Panamera in previous generations.
King Charles, during his time as Prince of Wales, added a third-generation A8 to his private fleet in which he was pictured using while attending various events.
It too has been a commonly used motor on the big screen.
Arguably the greatest movie car chase of the modern era in 1998's Ronin features a first-generation 'D2' S8 with a burbling 4.2-litre V8 under the bonnet.
The S8 was also prominent in The Transporter franchise featuring Jason Statham as Frank Martin from 2005 onwards.
While Martin - a suited-and-booted courier driver for hire - used an BMW E38 7 Series in the 2002 original, the punch-happy chauffeur switched to the potent Audi S8 thereafter.
Other notable popular film appearances include both the Iron Man and Taken franchises.
The A8 was available with both an extended wheelbase and the option of a 'Security' variant with armoured panels and bulletproof glass. As such, it was popular among Royals and execs
While the current fourth-generation A8 (pictured) is still available to configure on the manufacturer website, Audi has closed its order books in Germany and the UK this month
The death of the A8 comes as a result of stricter emissions regulations and the market shifting to SUVs.
The current D5 model, which launched in 2017, debuted only with the choice of a 282bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine or the 4.0-litre petrol V8 in the performance S8 variant.
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) - featuring a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine combined with a 100kW electric motor - arrived 12 months later.
Despite having been facelifted in 2021, any future update to the car was ruled out due to the arrival of tougher Euro 7 emissions limits, meaning new cleaner engines would have needed to be shoehorned into the A8 for Audi to comply.
Before order books closed, the standard wheelbase diesel started from £85,760 with around a £10,000 premium for the PHEV option. For LWB variants, prices increased by another £5k.
The S8 rang in at £118,335.

Its biggest German rivals have already pivoted to greener powertrains that tick the boxes of big wigs wanting to portray a conscience about their impact on the environment.
Both the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class now come with plug-in hybrid engines as well as the fully electric i7 and EQS respectively.
Audi has hinted that it could be replaced by a new Q9 luxury SUV to fill the premium void left by the A8 and compete with the likes of the Range Rover, Bentley Bentayga, BMW X7, Mercedes GLS, and Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
However, for the meantime, the smaller hybrid-powered Audi A6 is its plushest saloon choice, while the all-electric e-tron GT is another alternative, though also appears long in the tooth compared to more recent rivals.
A spokesperson for the brand told Daily Mail and This is Money that the A8 is indeed no longer available to order with production ceasing last month.
'Will see in time if a large luxurious limousine makes a comeback,' they added.
