'What would I like? It's difficult to say': Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum coy over Anfield future as he prepares to enter final year of his contract

  • Liverpool's Georginio Wijnaldum is out of contract at the end of next season
  • He has been linked with a move away from Anfield due to contract uncertainty
  • The Dutchman insists he is fully focused on this season rather than his future

Georginio Wijnaldum is putting uncertainty over his Liverpool future to one side as he is fully focused on winning trophies this season.

The Liverpool midfielder is out of contract at the end of next season and reports have suggested he could leave Anfield in the summer.

Wijnaldum, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle in 2016, is attracting interest from clubs in Italy and Spain but he insists he is content with life at Liverpool.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wijnaldum said: 'What would I like? It is difficult to say.

'It depends on what the club wants and how the situation is at that time. We will see. [Anfield], it's like home.

'I'm just focusing on bringing this season to a good end and that's the only thing I'm thinking of.'

Wijnaldum has been a regular under Jurgen Klopp this season with the Dutchman often lining up in midfield alongside Fabinho and captain Jordan Henderson.

The 29-year-old is set to add a Premier League medal to his trophy cabinet with his Liverpool side a staggering 16 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City with a game in hand.

They face West Ham in the Premier League on Wednesday with the Reds hoping to maintain their undefeated status.

Klopp has come under-fire this week for revealing he will rest all of his first-team stars for Liverpool's FA Cup rematch with Shrewsbury due to the game being played during the winter break.

The German said he would not even be attending the replay which has caused great debate but Wijnaldum is backing his manager's decision.

'Since I've been in the Premier League I've played the season without a winter break but I also know, before I came to the Premier League, how good it is for a player to have some rest,' he added.

'After the rest, you can go again. Your body is more rested than if you keep on going, so that's a good thing.

'As a player you want to be involved in every game there is but you also have to deal with your body and sometimes your body just says that it is not the right choice to do.

'You just have to see how the situation is but if the manager decides that the younger players are going to play the game then we should accept it.'
