England on the brink

And that, one and all, is that! Thanks for your company this morning and through the night.

What could have been, eh? The hope when Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer were at the crease, the eyebrow-raising when Josh Tongue struck early... for it all to come crashing down at the hands of Travis Head again.

Make no mistake - England will still try and win this game. But whether they have it in their locker is a totally different question.

Allow me to leave you with some of our top cricket stories:

Thanks everyone! Until tomorrow...

Tufnell: 'Why is Bashir here?'

Phil Tuffnell, former England spinner, BBC Test Match Special:

Everybody knows at Adelaide you play a spinner. I can understand not playing a spinner at Perth and perhaps not playing a spinner at Brisbane.
To not play a full-time recognised spin bowler in Adelaide - I think there is a bit of clogging up with selection.
I'm not having a go at Will Jacks because he has not got the tools to do it. But why has Bashir become unselectable?
If Bashir is not going to play here. Why is he here in the first place? No disrespect to Jacks, but Bashir would have bowled better than Jacks. He is a bowler, and it is in his blood.

Swann: 'It's a soft excuse'

Graeme Swann, former England spinner, TNT Sports:

The excuse is always rolled out that spinners can't bowl at the start and the end of the season. I think it's a soft excuse.
If you can't bowl at all times, find a role for yourself as the spinner in the team or you won't get picked.
They don't bowl but that is more to do with the way they're captained and fields are set doesn't allow them to get over under their belt.
The way spin is viewed in England is fundamentally wrong in county cricket and has been for a long time.
I grew up having to bowl early season and squeeze out 15 overs and try to find a way, not having the excuse of it's April so we can't play spin.

YOUR comments

  • Anthony1981, Birmingham: Why did I allow myself to think we might have actually stood a chance.
  • Andromeda_M30, London: Maybe, just maybe, Australia are a much better team.
  • House Harkonen, unknown: England will never be better than Australia at cricket. We've won the odd series over the years but they are next league above most of the time...
  • Everton 1, United Kingdom: An absolute shambles. Embarrassing.

LAWRENCE BOOTH in Adelaide

Lawrence has given his take from Adelaide - and I'll tell you now, it's a brutal one.

Honest, though, and agreeable. What else did England expect, is the message.

Lyon: 'The opportunity will present itself for me to get into the game'

Nathan Lyon, Australia spinner, TNT Sports:

It looks like a pretty good surface. We are very happy with where we are at the moment, but I would like a few more runs.
I am always looking forward to bowling. The opportunity will present itself for me to get into the game but we will go again tomorrow.
We will make sure we come up with some decent plans for a talented batting group.
Everyone knows my history here, so to overtake one of my childhood heroes is pretty special.
I'll keep going until I stop enjoying it. A while yet. I love my role.

An update on Ben Stokes' fitness

We've just had an insight from the England camp on Ben Stokes, who hasn't bowled yet this innings.

Jeetan Patel, England spin bowling coach, TNT Sports:

He is OK from what we understand. We don't really know just yet. He is the sort of character who leaves everything out there and he has spent a lot of time out there trying to do that for the England team.
It has taken a little bit of a toll, but we will see where he pulls up tomorrow.

He's knackered himself for the cause and England have come up short. You have to feel for him.

Langer: 'I didn't make any sense'

Justin Langer, former Australia player and coach, TNT Sports:

After England batted so well this morning, you could feel a glimmer of hope. But look at Travis Head's wagon wheel - you do not bowl to hit cut shot. They either couldn't execute the plan, or the plans were poor.
What's interesting, unlike a lot of modern day players, he has been batting outside off stump. He was confident enough to expose his stumps. It didn't make any sense that there was no coverage there.

Australia's day - again

England are on the brink after another day dominated by the hosts.

Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer did their best with the bat early on - Archer making his first Test 50 and Stokes eventually falling for 83 from 198 balls.

With the ball, trailing by less than 100, England struck early as Carse and Tongue removed Weatherald, Labuschagne and green cheaply before Jacks picked up the wicket of Khawaja.

After that, though, it was the Head-Carey show as Travis picked up his latest century in Adelaide and Alex picked up 50 of his own in a partnership that is well over 100.

It now, unfortunately, seems to be a matter of when - rather than if - Australia retain these Ashes.

STUMPS- Over 66: Australia 4-271

These two are going to keep milking Jacks, as Carey reverse sweeps his first delivery before Head pads away the second from over the wicket.

Duckett gets to the rope after a punch from the third delivery of the over, but he can't get there in time, and it's four.

More padding away from Head, and five more from the over - and that is stumps.

06:58

Over 65: Australia 4-266

More short stuff from Tongue as Carey ducks under his latest delivery.

TNT are now speculating that Stokes must have an injury - I have to agree. There was such an effort with the bat and he was off the field earlier. He has now bowled this innings.

A single off the final ball prevents a maiden from Tongue.

06:55

Over 64: Australia 4-265 - 50 UP FOR CAREY

Two men are out on the off-side boundary as Stokes and Jacks try and entice Carey into a big shot but it's unlikely he will take that on now.

TNT have just pointed out that there have only been three maidens in this second innings. Highlights a real lack of control.

A long hope from Jacks is pulled for four. Ben Stokes shakes his head.

And that's 50 for Alex Carey. Very much deserved.

It's 100 for up for Jacks, too - and not of the good kind. Annnnd the lead is 350.

Nine from the over.
