MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference’s coordinator of officials Steve Shaw says allowing replay officials to overturn player ejections for targeting but not penalties needs to be re-examined
The new rule is, however, cutting down on the potentially dangerous hits, Shaw said Wednesday.
He says there have been 14 targeting flags within the SEC this season, with eight resulting in ejections and six where the players were allowed to return.
There have been 52 targeting penalties nationally. Shaw says the numbers are down from last season.
There were four called in last weekend’s SEC games, the most of the season. Three players were ejected.
The rule is designed to protect players by stopping defenders from hitting defenseless players above the shoulders or leading with the crown of the helmet in tackling.
