Meteorologists have warned that the worst of Winter Storm Fern is yet to come as 'catastrophic ice' is expected to hit the Northeast on Sunday night.
At least 24 inches of snow is set to blanket the region this evening into Monday morning, before a deep freeze and icy conditions take over in the southern region, the National Weather Service Prediction Center said.
The predicted ice storm could cause further power outages - as more than one million Americans are already in the dark. So far, 12 deaths have been reported.
According to the New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services, Sunday gave just a glimpse of what is to come on Monday.
'The worst conditions are expected between 12PM today and 12AM Monday,' the agency said.
A total of one to two feet of snow is expected to fall in the Empire State, along with coastal flooding, wind and an 'impactful' cold front.
Schools across the country, as well as government offices, have already announced closures for Monday. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has urged businesses to let their staff work from home due to safety concerns.

NYC subways to remain running throughout storm
New York City subways will keep operating throughout the storm, according to MTA chairman and CEO Janno Lieber.
Mayor Mamdani said the trains will run on a Sunday schedule through Monday. '
'So far the preparations have really been paying off,' he said.
