Sales of new cars hit highest level so far this century as economic recovery gathers pace
Sales of new cars have hit their highest level so far this century as the economic recovery gathers pace, figures showed yesterday.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said a total of 492,774 new cars were registered in March – up 6 per cent on a year ago and the highest monthly figure since August 1998.
It was the 37th month of growth in a row for the new car market with sales last month boosted by the new ‘15’ number plates. Motor industry chiefs said car sales had helped ‘drive the UK out of recession’.

It is another encouraging sign of a flourishing economy and will be seized on by Chancellor George Osborne as part of his election campaign.
SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: ‘The best month this century for new car registrations is a welcome boost for the UK’s thriving automotive sector.’
But he added: ‘Whatever the General Election result, the new government must keep up the commitment to the sector.’
The best-selling models in March 2015 include the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.
