This month, the energy price cap went up by £111 per year for the typical home to £1,849.

It is the third time in a row that the price cap, which is reassessed by Ofgem every three months, has gone up.

More homeowners are looking for ways to beat these rises, and protect their bills against the ups and downs of the unpredictable energy market.

One way to do that is to switch to a green energy source, such as solar panels, but the upfront cost of doing so can put people off.

Egg Energy* offers a way to spread the cost and has been helping customers to make the move to cleaner power - and save money on their bills - for more than 10 years.

Egg Energy* is accredited as a Trusted Trader by Which? and its customers have given it an average score of 4.4 on Trustpilot.

According to a report this month by the think tank Ember, the amount of solar energy produced across the world increased by 29 per cent 2024 - making it the fastest-growing power source for the twentieth year in a row.

In fact, the amount of solar energy produced by homes and businesses has doubled in just three years.

How much do solar panels cost?

While more homeowners are interested in going green and cutting their energy bills for years to come, the upfront cost of installing solar panels can be a barrier.

That is why Egg* offers a payment plan, allowing them to spread the cost over five to 15 years at 10.9 per cent APR with manageable monthly payments.

This means someone with a £4,500 solar panel system could pay as little as £51 per month - and start making savings on their bills straight away.

Solar power could even boost the value of your home, as lower energy bills are increasingly attractive to buyers.

According to 2024 research by scientists from Swansea University and the University of Birmingham, it could increase a property’s value by 7.1 per cent.

Those signing up to such a deal need to be aware that the panels will cost them more due to the interest rate, which is higher than the cost of borrowing on a mortgagebut similar to the rates on personal loans.

Who are Egg Energy?

Egg Energy has been working with homeowners and businesses to install solar panels and take control of their energy bills for more than a decade.

It is owned by Liberty Global Ventures, a group of more than 75 companies which aim to use technology as a force for good.

Other companies in the group include Virgin Media and O2.

How does it work?

Egg* understands that switching to greener energy can seem daunting, and that customers will have a lot of questions.

That is why every customer gets a dedicated project co-ordinator, who sees the plans through from design to installation and beyond.

They will tailor the system to your home and budget, and the installation takes an average of four days.

After that, customers can monitor their electricity generation and usage through Egg’s handy app*.

Those with a battery system can also schedule times to store energy from the grid when it is at its cheapest.

Should I get a battery with my solar panels?

Solar panels sometimes generate more energy than the home is able to use, especially on sunny days.

Egg* also offers customers battery storage alongside their solar panel systems.

If you opt to install a battery, this allows you to store excess energy and use it later on - offering even greater savings on your bills.

While the battery comes at an additional cost, this means you could start to see a return on your investment even faster.

It is also possible to sell excess energy back to the National Grid and be paid for it.

How do I get started?

The first step is to enter some information about your property, such as its size and location, on Egg’s website*.

It takes two minutes and you will then get a tailored quote.

After that, Egg* will consult with you about how a solar panel system could work for your home, where the panels would be installed, and what kind of equipment is best for you.

If you decide to go ahead, the installation will start in as little as two weeks.
