And now the most intriguing two minutes in television, the latest from the wartime grapevine:
Grave Threats
Four days after Palestinians threatened to make Israel, “pay a high price” if it expels or kills Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat (search), a Palestinian Liberation official is now threatening the United States.
PLO General Secretary Sultan Abu Al-Einen in Lebanon said, “Any harm done to Arafat will turn the Palestinians into human bombs.” And, he said, “The U.S. in particular must remember that we are present in every country across the world.”
Palestinian children are echoing those threats. A 10-year-old schoolgirl, quoted in the Jerusalem Post, says, “I’m prepared to make a big sacrifice. I’m prepared to go to the Jews myself and kill them wherever they are.”
FOX News Foot Soldiers?
CNN war correspondent Christiane Amanpour is now lashing out at her own network for being, “intimidated by the [Bush] administration and its foot soldiers at Fox News” during the war in Iraq. Amanpour, quoted in USA Today, says the administration and FOX News, “put a climate of fear and self-censorship” over coverage of the war.
Meanwhile, an English professor at Louisiana’s Northwestern State University, James Means, seems to have sentiments similar to Amanpour. Means…a specialist in 18th and 19th Century Literature…is blasting yours truly for being, “the least objective reporter I have ever listened to. A total pig.”
Means concludes that, “your program is … an insult to thinking people.” As for President Bush, Means calls him, “that drooling redneck president of ours.”
Cheney Out of Context
A front-page story in today’s Washington Post says Vice President Dick Cheney on Meet the Press yesterday was not forthcoming…”when asked about Saudi Arabia’s ties to Al-Qaeda (search) and the Sept. 11 hijackers. ‘I don’t want to speculate,’ he said, adding that Sept. 11 is ‘over with now, it’s done, it’s history and we can put it behind us.”
Thing is, these two quotes were taken from two separate points Cheney was making, and, as a look at the show’s full transcript shows, Cheney was in fact criticizing the…”great temptation to look at these events as … ‘It’s over now. It’s done. It’s history and put it behind us.”
