Megyn Kelly clashes with Piers Morgan over Bad Bunny's halftime show
Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly tore into Piers Morgan for his defense of Bad Bunny's Spanish-speaking Super Bowl halftime show. Kelly, 55,called the foreign language performance 'a middle finger to the rest of America' during a fiery appearance on Monday's Piers Morgan Uncensored. The British host had argued that it was a non-issue, which led Kelly to become enraged. 'Who gives a damn that we have 40 million Spanish speakers in the United States?' the former Fox News star fumed. 'We have 310 million who don’t speak a lick of Spanish. 'This is supposed to be a unifying event for the country, not for the Latinos.'
Kelly used a mock accent at the mention of the ethnic group, and added that the Super Bowl was 'not for one small group, but for the country.' 'We don’t need a Black national anthem. We don’t need a Spanish-speaking non-English performer. And we don’t need an ICE or America-hater featured as our primetime entertainment,' she continued. Bad Bunny's past criticism of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has enraged US conservatives, though the Puerto Rican rapper's performance on Sunday mostly steered clear of politics.
Morgan Argues the US Has No Official Language
It was, however, suffused with several strong statements about Latinos and immigrants, and, as Kelly pointed out, performed almost entirely in Spanish. The concept confounded Kelly, who argued that the values of the American sport were being stomped on. Morgan, however, could not see what the commotion was about. He maintained that since the US has no official language, Kelly's point was moot. 'All right, let me tell you something,' Kelly exhaled, after a smug Morgan - a US resident and British citizen - laughed at one of her remarks.
'This attitude is why you and Great Britain have lost your culture to a bunch of radical Muslims who took over. And now it's gone. 'We're not allowing that here,' she declared. 'Whether it's Hispanic, whether it's Muslim - it's not happening in the United States of America; that's why President Trump was elected. 'And whether it's Bad Bunny, who is American but refuses to speak English in his performances, or anybody else, we have to keep the Super Bowl, which is a quintessential American event, Football - that kind of football is ours,' Kelly continued.
'They call it "American football,"' she added. 'And the halftime show and everything around it needs to stay quintessentially American, not Spanish, not Muslim, not anything other than good, old-fashioned American apple pie. 'There should be a meatloaf, maybe some fried chicken, and an English-speaking performer - that's what the Super Bowl should be.' The Daily Mail has approached Kelly for comment. Bad Bunny - whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio - previously said he avoided touring in the US to protect fans from potential encounters with ICE.
Rapper Used Grammys Speech to Condemn ICE and Call for Unity
He also used his acceptance speech for Best Album of the Year at last week's Grammys to insist the agency was treating Americans like 'animals', referring to Donald Trump's ongoing immigration crackdown. The artist ended his speech by saying, 'So please, we need to be different if we fight, we have to do it with love. If, yeah, we don’t hate them. We love our people. We love our family, and that’s the way to do it. With love. Don’t forget that, please.' Similar messaging was seen on the Levi Stadium's Jumbo-Tron during the show Sunday, with the words: 'The only thing more powerful than hate is love.'
