Kroger allegedly copies Walmart again

Grocery chain Kroger appears to be taking another page out of the Walmart book. The supermarket giant announced on Monday it was hiring Greg Foran, a former Walmart US chief executive and most recently CEO of Air New Zealand, to be its newest head honcho. 'The appointment of Greg Foran to the top spot at Kroger is exactly what the grocery giant needs,' said Neil Saunders, managing director and retail expert at GlobalData. The new hire comes on the heels of Kroger aggressively answering Walmart Supercenters with its own Kroger Marketplaces, a general merchandise superstore expanding in places like Texas, Indiana and West Virginia.

A Digital Turnaround Specialist Takes Center Stage

Foran led Walmart's largest division for six years until 2019, establishing the company's online ordering and pickup systems before even the Covid-19pandemic struck. He also has a track record improving digital services with Air New Zealand, an important skillset considering Kroger's botched online services partnership with the UK-based Ocadoin 2025. After the expensive automated fulfillment centers failed to take off because the lack of consumer demand, Kroger, which had recently been slammed for ripping off customers with its 'dynamic pricing', ended the partnership at a loss of $2.6billion.

Kroger Names New CEO After Months of Uncertainty

Kroger had also been without a permanent CEO since Rodney McMullen resigned in March, with Foran now replacing interim leader Ronald Sargent, as well as joining the board of directors. It didn't help that the supermarket's self-checkout technology garnered unwanted attention after a customer's claim of being humiliated for after getting scrutinized for shoplifting went viral. Finding a new leader to compete with Walmart - and the many other competitors in the cutthroat grocery space - couldn't come soon enough for the company. 'Appointing a new CEO who used to work at Walmart is a sign that Kroger wants to up its game,' said Saunders.

'I do not think Kroger wants to completely copy Walmart, but it does want to adopt the operational prowess of Walmart and inject some of the things Walmart is doing right - on pricing, products, and e-commerce - into its own business,' he added. And pricingis the name of the game in the current environment, with firms like Walmart and Aldi maintaining low prices without sacrificing quality. Regional chains like H-E-B, massive newcomers like Amazon and the low-cost German grocer Lidl are all threatening to squeeze Kroger's market share even further.

'The to-do list for the incoming CEO is long, but at the top of the list is creating a much sharper point of view on price, assortment, and store experience,' according to Saunders. 'Basically, Kroger needs to stand out more in an increasingly crowded field.' The Daily Mail has reached out to Kroger for comment.
